On September 15 and 16 2010 a conference will be held in Keflavik, Iceland, on lessons to learn from the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano. It will be a meeting of all major associations concerned:
- International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) – ICAO is a body of the UN is in charge of the VAAC’s.
- International Air Transport Association (IATA) – that represents the interests of aviation industries.
and many more, from universities and specialized institutes, mainly in Iceland, as well as all the organisations that took part in the technical risk assessment. It will certainly be one of the major topics to determine new processes in responding to another volcano ash, ensuring to keep a minimum level of flight transportation going on in any predictable volcano eruption.
The actual eruption of Mount Sinabung in Indonesia, which possibly was lastly active in the year 1600, shows that the same surprise might happen to Mount Vesuvio near Naples. So, don’t panic, be prepared.
